Talking Thursday

Talking Thursday – did you know

  • 1 in 6 people* report experiencing poor mental health, like anxiety and low moods, in any given week in England.
  • 1 in 4 people* will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England.

Earlier this month we had a person attend one of our in-company psychological first aid and wellbeing sessions (First Aid for Mental Health) and at the start of the day, they expressed that they found the whole topic of mental health a waste of time saying ‘they just need to get on with it’ as you can imagine it caused some uncomfortable moments (not always a bad thing) however one of the UK’s lead instructors Lee Marsh was delivering the course and by the end of the course the learner wrote this on there feedback form:

I didn’t want to come on this course, my employer made it mandatory for all those with management responsibilities, I felt this topic was stupid to focus on in the workplace, it’s likely to give people another excuse to phone in sick. I already have someone in my team I thought was playing the mental health card. However I am now feeling I have failed to understand what they have been going through with a relationship breakdown leading to them moving house, losing friends, not having access to their children as often etc… I just felt they needed to get over it, move on. The training with Lee was excellent. It was not what I expected, as I come to the end of the course I realise I was rude and confrontational at the start of the course, Lee was both sympathetic to my concerns which took me by surprise and yet as we progressed through the day I found the delivery challenged those views and I found insight not just to others but also myself, the pressure bucket explanation inputs and outputs will stay with me I think for ever, and the seek to understand with tell me focused – supportive conversations. Thank you Lee for an amazing course you are truly gifted at training and coaching others. Best course I think I have ever been on. Now for the hard part implementing it with others. Karl D
