Dealing with insect stings and bites

Insect stings and bites are common at this time of year both in and outside of workplaces.

Recognition

  • Site of the sting is painful
  • Redness and swelling of the skin around the sting

Treatment

Aims: To relieve swelling and pain and arrange removal to hospital if necessary

  1. Reassure the casualty. If the sting is visible, brush or scape it off sideways with the edge of a credit card or your fingernail. Do not use tweezers
  2. Raise the affected part and apply a cold compress to minimise swelling.
  3. Keep the compress in place for at least 10 minutes.
  4. If pain and swelling persists tell the casualty to seek medical advice.
  5. Monitor vital signs and watch for signs of an allergic reaction
